Description (from the UW course catalog): An introduction to ethical, legal, and policy issues related to analytics, "big data" and algorithms to support decision making. Gain familiarity with major debates and controversies in a variety of contexts. Critically analyze course materials and apply moral reasoning and legal concepts to assess case studies and critique arguments made by others.
Upcoming Course (2025-2026): Responsibility in the Age of Big Data & AI
Description: This course aims at equipping students with a solid theoretical and practical background on moral responsibility with respect to current and future data practices and AI technologies. It begins with an overview of the philosophical concept of moral responsibility and its importance to our social and legal practices. It then focuses on the way this concept and these practices are challenged by current and future data practices and technologies. Finally, it considers a variety of proposals for how to address these challenges.Â
